Belfast & County Down Railway Museum Trust

 

The Trust was formed in 1972 with the aim of preserving artefacts, photographs and paraphernalia relating to the railways of Ireland in general and, the Belfast & County Down Railway in particular; from which it takes its name.

 

Downpatrick Steam Railway and Museum

 

A working museum based on the site of the Downpatrick terminus of the Belfast & Co. Down Railway.  Visitors can experience travelling on a full sized train from the terminus in Downpatrick out into the surrounding countryside.

 

First Bangor Model Railway Club

 

First Bangor Model Railway Club was formed in 1989. It is a church organization connected to First Bangor Presbyterian Church in Bangor, County Down, Northern Ireland. Today it is an active and well known club attending many shows and exhibitions across the land.

Irish Railway Record Society

 

Formed in 1946 the Irish Railway Record Society aims, through its Journal, to record all the goings on in Ireland’s railways.

 

The Railway Preservation Society of Ireland

 

A registered charity formed in 1964 to operate and preserve in working order steam locomotives and coaches which were disappearing rapidly from the Irish Railway system.  Today the Society owns and operates a fleet of nine steam locomotives and around 20 vintage carriages on public trains. 

 

Ulster Folk & Transport Museum

Based at Cultra in North Down this museum contains Ireland's largest transport collection. The General Transport Galleries take you through the history of transport from before the introduction of the wheel to flight, along the way marking Northern Ireland's unique contribution. Includes many BCDR artefacts.

The Linen Hall Library

 

The Linen Hall Library Belfast. Founded in 1788, it is the oldest library in Belfast. It is one of the leading centres for Irish and Local Studies in the North of Ireland.

The Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) is the official place of deposit for public records in Northern Ireland. They hold many records from the BCDR under the Ulster Transport Authority collection.

Excellent online catalogues of their extensive collection of historic Irish photographs.

 

St. Andrews University Special Collections - Photographic database

 

St Andrews University Library holds one of the largest and most important collections of historic photography in Scotland. This includes an archive of Picture Postcards by Valentines of Dundee. They have many scenes from Northern Ireland in their on-line database.
